I usually conceive the idea for a painting during the process of creating the painting. Sometimes I begin by filling the canvas with color and seeing what shapes appear from my brushstrokes.  Other times I start by drawing random lines. I try to let my senses find what the canvas has to say. If I have a definite idea of what kind of world I want to create, it generally changes during the making of it.

I feel that the one and only geology class I had in college has had the most long lasting influence on my work.  Learning about plate tectonics and the variety of dynamic interactions of the earth continues to fascinate me.  From my experience scuba diving in Grand Cayman, my visit to the volcanoes of Hawaii and my many years of sailing on the Chesapeake Bay, the awesome unpredictability of nature has grabbed me and directed my artistic focus.  My hard- edged geometric work is a reflection of this absorption of nature, even though not recognizably so. I believe that Fishing Long Legs, Not Just Black and White and Coast to Coast all evolved from my sailing experiences on the Chesapeake Bay, and the need at that time to escape the tensions of the city.

I like to combine opaque and transparent glazes to give depth and interest to my paintings. I enjoy working with the idea of creating an illusion of something beyond the surface. The painting becomes successful to me if I am able to obtain an emotional response and a sense of mystery that provokes a closer look.
